Brasilia

Brazilian President Dilma Rousseff asserted today
that with implementation of the Quota Law, her
government keeps the promise of giving youths of
low-income families more access to higher
education. This means paying a historic debt to the
poorest people and the Quota law will be
implemented this year, forcing the federal higher
education institutions to assign 12.5 percent of their
places to students from public schools, Rousseff
said in her usual radio program on Mondays "Coffe
with the President."

Half of this percentage has to be granted to low-
income-family, black and indigenous students, she
said and reiterated the need to give more
opportunities to the poorest people, with a view to
guaranteeing improvement of their education and
standard living.

Education is the main instrument to reduce
inequality and build a fairer and more developed
Brazil, she said after ratifying her administration's
willingness to help the youths that desire to take
university courses, but lack the necessary
resources.

The president said that more than 1.9 million
Brazilian students aspire to take a university course
by means of the Unified Selective System, which
grants 129,000 places at 101 federal higher
education centers.
