About Portside - Joe Atkins, Marjorie Cohn, Michael
Eisenscher, Hunter Gray, John Pietaro
I've been a reader and occasional contributor to Portside
for several years now, and I'm proud to be associated with
an organization that is providing such cogent and necessary
news about labor and social justice around the country and
the world. With all the changes in media in recent years,
the necessity to get out the real news has grown even more.
Portside provides the kind of stories that mainstream
newspapers ignored even before they went into decline. Thank
goodness we've got an outlet out there letting us know
what's really going on around us.
Joseph (Joe) B. Atkins,
Labor writer and journalism professor at the University of
Portside provides an invaluable service to those of us who
seek to transform our society into one where freedom,
justice, and equality prevail. I look forward to Portside's
daily mailings for my research and I often share them with
other like-minded folks. Thank you, Portside, for your

I don't spend a lot of time thinking about Portside, but I
do use it frequently and review its dispatches daily. I
value it as a significant source of information and analysis
for and about the progressive movement. I frequently share
some of its postings with my own Labor Left News or
Solidarity4Ever lists, and notice that Portside occasionally
uses some material I post to my list. It is part of the
larger universe of progressive and left intellectual
I think it should more clearly "brand" any articles that
appear on it as original to Portside - as distinguished from
those it runs from other sources. Maybe it should have a
tag line: "ORIGINAL TO PORTSIDE" OR "PORTSIDE ORIGINAL" OR
"EXCLUSIVE TO PORTSIDE".
It could also have a stronger pitch for paid subscriptions
both at the top and bottom of every dispatch:
"Portside is a user-supported progressive community resource
that can only continue if readers like YOU support it.
Please become a paid subscriber or donor. It is an
investment in YOUR source for thoughtful and thought-
provoking analysis, opinion, news and information. Here's

Basically, Portside does a good job. My only suggestions
1] More stressing of the benefits of democratic socialism.
2] More material dealing with Native American challenges
and, aside from the immigration crises which you cover
pretty well, more on challenges facing Mexican-Americans.
3] Returning to an always interesting dimension of
Portside of some years ago, occasional use of pertinent and
original material from the "grassroots."

Portside is very much as a broadside for today's Left,
something sorely missing from the movement in this era of
floundering magazines and bankrupt newspapers. It used to
only be moral bankruptcy we needed to worry about in major
media, but now that so many periodicals are a thing of the
past, I miss the need to go to the newsstand. But the
internet offers us a wealth of possibilities these days. And
there is a wealth of information out there. But for many of
us, there is an overload of opinion. How to select what
Since its inception a decade ago, I have enjoyed reading
postings from Portside, a progressive daily which acts as a
portal for street-level activists as well as those from
academia. Here's a means for the anti-war struggle to give
real-time reports about demonstrations, for those fighting
in the trenches of labor to alert others about strikes and
actions, a chance for immigrants' and women's rights, civil
rights and environmental justice activists to reach out
widely; Portside's in-depth reportage and editorials about
radical politics and social change allow the issues to take
flight. Yes, here's a voice for OUR politics to be offered
to a global audience. I have been proud to be a Portside
contributor to this important, wider-Left daily.
Congratualtions to Portside on its 10th anniversary!
