Rachel Maddow on Same-Sex Marriage in New York:

"Maybe" I'll Tie the Knot

By Julianne Escobedo Shepherd
AlterNet
June 25, 2011

Last night, Maddow broadcast for nearly an hour after
her regularly scheduled time slot in order to cover the
developments in Albany and eventual vote to legalize
gay marriage in New York City. While thousands of
people hooted, cried and sang outside the Stonewall Inn
in the streets of Manhattan (here's the photo we
snapped there just ten minutes after the vote was
announced http://twitpic.com/5gf1xw ), Maddow solemnly
delivered the news, breaking into a grin only when she
reported on the comptroller's statement about the
"positive economic impact" same-sex marriage will have
on the New York economy. And will Maddow, openly gay,
marry her longtime partner, Susan Mikula? "Maybe"!
Watch it below.

* Re: Ancient Farmers Started the First 'Green
Revolution'

There is more to the problem of short rice. The grains
are filled out from photosynthesis in the top leaf that
is translocated downward. The other leaves are helpful
to get the plant not only above the water but also
above the weeds. IF ancient farmers selected for short
rice they must have also had some means to reduce the
weeds.

* Re: Federal Spending Cap May Endanger Social Security

Social Security is separate and apart from the Federal
Budget.

It has its own funds which are viable far into the
future.

Why these scare tactics continue to be used re: S.S.,
the 2 Meds is a sin and a shame and obviously pushed by
the FAR RIGHT WING. At the end of it all, the Koch
Brothers and their John Birch and Corporate pals will
have taken over the USA and we will all just say
"BAAAA, BAAAA, BAAA" harrumph!

M. Breslin

* Re: Cuba, African Union: Cease-Fire in Lybia

This is the best overall statement on resolving the
civil war in Libya I have seen.

Bill Shortell

===

This is absolute nonsense. Gaddafi is a psychopath who
has ruled his people brutally for years and stolen
billions of money for his family and tribe that
rightfully belong to the nation to help it prosper. The
world cannot afford self- serving dictators like this
anymore, including the one in Syria who is violently
fighting his own people. It is immoral to keep people
in poverty and to brutalize them as these dictators are
doing. The UN and NATO are finally taking some action
to support these peoples to throw off the yoke of these
dictators. This is the democratic thing to do, so that
they can elect governments that pass policies that get
them on the road to living in the 21st century where
their youth can get educated, raise families and such
nations can take their proper place in the modern
world.

Readings: An Encounter Between the Word and the
Community

Paul Mayer offers a personal and intimate "I was there"
tour of the major social movements since the 1960s and
shares the spiritual roots of this journey. In his
recently completed memoir, he covers escape from Nazi
Germany as a child, conversion to Catholicism and
contemplative life as a Benedictine monk, a Latin
American Liberation Theology-based community, the
Berrigan brothers, Vietnam under U.S. bombs, the
Children of War project, and the Navajo medicine man
who deepened his connection to the earth. His aim is to
encourage reflection on the challenges and graces of
all of our journeys.
