REWIND - A Week of Quotes & Cartoons

SUNDAY

Quote of the Day
September 25, 2011

'The government is increasingly at war with the
citizens. It is taking decisions whose consequences are
not only squeezing the middle class, but threatening
its very existence.'

Quote of the Day

'Wall Street and the big banks are trying to buy their
way out of paying their fair share. We know where the
money is to rebuild our economy and it's not in the
pockets of school children or in Grandma's pension -
it's on Wall Street.'

Quote of the Day
September 27, 2011

'While the new government may have good intentions,
unfortunately, on the ground, Colombian working
families are neither safer nor more able to exercise
their basic rights. Colombia continues to be the most
dangerous place in the world to be a union member.

'...Simply put, Colombia should not be rewarded with a
trade agreement until it develops a proven track record
of ensuring that workers can exercise the fundamental
rights of free association and collective bargaining;
preventing violence against union leaders and other
social justice advocates; and bringing to justice those
who have perpetrated such crimes.'

Quote of the Day
September 28, 2011

'This poll shows what bi-partisanship really means.
When you step outside Washington, D.C. and talk to
average Americans of all political parties including
self-identified fiscal conservatives - the answer is the
same - Do Not Cut Social Security & Medicare to reduce
the deficit. Americans understand the real-life
impacts of the cuts being promoted and they don't
believe cutting these vital programs shows fiscal
responsibility. That is true bi-partisanship that
Congress ignores at its own peril.'

Quote of the Day
September 29, 2011

"Anyone with eyes open knows that the gangsterism of
Wall Street -- financial institutions generally -- has
caused severe damage to the people of the United States
(and the world). And should also know that it has been
doing so increasingly for over 30 years, as their power
in the economy has radically increased, and with it
their political power. That has set in motion a vicious
cycle that has concentrated immense wealth, and with it
political power, in a tiny sector of the population, a
fraction of 1%, while the rest increasingly become what
is sometimes called "a precariat" -- seeking to survive
in a precarious existence. They also carry out these
ugly activities with almost complete impunity -- not
only too big to fail, but also "too big to jail."

'The courageous and honorable protests underway in Wall
Street should serve to bring this calamity to public
attention, and to lead to dedicated efforts to overcome
it and set the society on a more healthy course."

Quote of the Day
September 30, 2011

'It seems that old habits die hard for Bank of America.
After years of raking in excess profits off an unfair
and anti-competitive interchange system, Bank of
America is trying to find new ways to pad their profits
by sticking it to its customers.

'It's overt, unfair and I hope their customers have the
final say.'

Senate Majority Whip Dick Durbin (D-Ill),
author Durbin Amendment, a provision of
the Dodd-Frank financial reform law
that set limits on the fees banks
could charge retailers for swiping their
debit cards,commenting on the bank's
intent to charge card holders five
dollars a month

Quote of the Day
October 1, 2011

'You would never guess from all the talk of
demonization that the rich enjoy perhaps the strongest
PR machine on the planet, far beyond their entourages
of agents, publicists and assorted image-makers. The
mainstream media, for example, are not owned by
collectives of busboys and taxi drivers, and even the
"liberal" outlets among them are not pitched toward the
impecunious. They may snicker when the occasional hedge
fund manager is brought to justice, but they've been
equally snarky about populist actions against the rich,
such as the ongoing occupation of Wall Street, which is
newsworthy if only for the levels of brutality it's
elicited from the NYPD. Or did you know that the
Transportation Security Administration just won union
representation this summer? Probably not, because
that's "labor news," which has been all but supplanted
by "business news".'
