'"Let me tell you who my rival is. It does not bear a
name or have a face, it's the finance industry. In the
past 20 years, the financial industry has taken control
of our societies, of our lives and threatens our
states.

Quote of the Day
April 25, 2012
'In 2007, President George W. Bush signed a bill that
cut in half interest rates on subsidized student loans
until 2012. Those low rates will expire on July 1 -
going back to 6.8 percent from 3.4 percent - and, to
prevent college from becoming even more unaffordable
for millions of students, the obvious move is to renew
them. But nothing is that easy or sensible anymore in
Washington, where House Republicans are far more
interested in cutting taxes, largely for the rich, than
they are in helping low- and middle-income students get
a college education.'

Quote of the Day

'Even if the U.S. economy (as well as President Obama's
reelection campaign) survives the global slowdown,
we're heading for a big dose of austerity economics
next January - when drastic spending cuts are scheduled
to kick in, as well as tax increases on the middle
class. But the U.S. economy isn't nearly healthy enough
to bear this burden.
'If nothing is done to reverse course in the interim,
we'll be following Europe into a double dip.'

FRIDAY
Quote of the Day
April 27, 2012
'With the dark clouds of the ongoing euro crisis
thickening over Spain this spring, German Chancellor
Angela Merkel on Thursday staunchly defended her focus
on euro-zone austerity and once again insisted that the
EU fiscal pact, signed in March, would not be
revisited.
'In comments clearly aimed at French presidential
candidate François Hollande, Merkel told Germany's WAZ
media group that the pact "cannot be renegotiated." The
Socialist Hollande has suggested that, if he emerges
victorious over French President Nicolas Sarkozy in the
second round of elections on May 6, he would ask for
changes to the agreement. The fiscal pact, which
imposes strict new rules governing budget deficits and
sovereign debt, was signed by 25 of the 27 European
Union member states. The UK and Czech Republic declined
to join.
'Hollande's reply was not long in coming. Speaking to
broadcaster France 2 on Thursday evening, he said: "It
is not Germany that will decide for the entirety of
Europe." When asked what he plans to say to Merkel
should he win the election, he said: "I will tell her
that the French people had made a decision that
envisages a renegotiation of the pact".'
