* LIU faculty are on strike
At 8 am yesterday, Wednesday 9/7, the LIU faculty (LIUFF)
went on strike. All summer long the negotiations were
acrimonious and contentious. The final contract proposed by
administration was completely unacceptable, both from a
faculty and student standpoint. You can check out the
details at www.liuff.org.
As you can imagine, our administration is really playing
hardball. They have canceled our healthcare as of midnight
tonight.
We need all the help we can get. If you have time, join us
on the picket line in front of the main entrance at Flatbush
and DeKalb in Brooklyn anytime between 8 am and 6 pm each
weekday.
We are holding a strike rally on Monday, 9/12 at 3 pm at the
Lafayette Presbyterian Church 85 South Oxford Street,
between Lafayette and Fulton Streets in Fort Greene,
Brooklyn.
Lastly, feel free to send an email message or call some of
our administrators telling them you're on our side and
watching them closely.
Some of the folks to contact are.....

BTW, Feel free to pass this message along to folks who you
think could join us on the picket line or support us.

* Re: Carl Oglesby - 60s Activist Remembered
I saw Oglesby and Bob Scheer debate the Vietnam War at U. of
Utah vs. late U.S. Senator Bennett (and I can't even
remember who the other establishment debator was). It broke
my heart then that a tedious hack like Bennett was in the
Senate and a brilliant thinker and speaker like Oglesby
could never get there.

These reflections are the most encouraging I have heard/read
this past week!! Glad I am not along in my not understanding
what is going on with our news, our collective memories.

* Re: Israel Is Paying for Gaza War With Turkey and Egypt
Crises
Do you have room in Portside for the views of other
leftists, that see Israel's current government as one of two
sources of this crisis, the other being the combination of a
Hamas that will not recognize Israel, and a Fatah that
cannot swing the opinion of its own citizens? Or is it all
Israel's fault?
