Spanish Condemn Neoliberal Policies of Socialist Party

The PSOE (Spanish Socialist Worker's Party has suffered
a heavy defeat in Spanish regional and municipal
elections of May 22. confirming a heavy penalization of
its neoliberal policies.

From 66.2% of voters who went to the polls Sunday, only
27.81% voted for the ruling party, against 37.34% for
the Popular Party (PP). The only reaction of Jose Luis
Zapatero facing this historic defeat is to "regret not
having been able to explain the dimension of the
crisis."

Izquierda Unida (IU) is the third political force with
6.3%, increasing the number of votes and elected
representatives in comparison to 2007. IU also took the
opportunity to reiterate its support for the ongoing
social movements in Spain and in particular for the
thousands of people that asked for "Real Democracy" and
that were occupying since May 15 Puerta del Sol,
Madrid's main square. Spontaneous and peaceful, the
movement "15 May" bears many political demands, urging
to strength democracy and social security.

Even though, Basque Country was dominated by the PNV
(Nationalist Christian Democratic Party), the Bildu
(left coalition) become the second force with 25% of
the votes and the biggest number of elected in the

The Spanish citizens called to vote this weekend for
the local elections have just expressed the strong
refusal of Socialist Party (PSOE) policies. As the
bipartisanship obliges, it is the ultraliberal party
(PP) which comes out victorious from this election.

The left of real change progresses with Izquierda Unida
( IU).

These results confirm what we've been observing in
Europe since the beginning of the crisis: the
governments that apply the austerity plans required by
the European Union "to restore confidence to financial
markets "are sanctioned by the people. The strategy of
the lesser evil leads to nothing.

This rejection is also expressed in Spain since May
15th, by the movement of "unworthy" people that is
growing day by day. By denouncing the unemployment and
precariousness, as well as the measures that do not
change their lives, they claim the employ the money in
the name of the people and a true democracy.

This movement is a tremendous hope that requires a
political alternative. The European Left Party supports
the Spanish youth movement and the information and
action day announced by the European Trade Union
Confederation on June 21st. We call for the convergence
of struggles in Europe against the austerity policies
and the "Euro Pact +" which aims to systematize the
precariousness and deprive people even more of their
economic and financial sovereignty.
