REWIND - A Week of Quotes & Cartoons
SUNDAY
Quote of the Day
April 17, 2011
'One too many times, this court has been witness to the
shoddy practices and sloppy accountings of the mortgage
service industry. With each revelation, one hopes that
the bottom of the barrel has been reached and that the
industry will self correct. Sadly, this does not appear
to be reality.'
Elizabeth W. Magner, a Louisiana
bankruptcy court in an pinion
involving a couple whose bank
tried to foreclose on them even
though they were current on their
mortgage. Quoted in 'Homework
Regulators Aren't Doing'
by Gretchen Morgenson.

Quote of the Day

'Sorry to be cynical, but right now "bipartisan" is
usually code for assembling some conservative Democrats
and ultraconservative Republicans - all of them with
close ties to the wealthy, and many who are wealthy
themselves - and having them proclaim that low taxes on
high incomes and drastic cuts in social insurance are
the only possible solution.
'This would be a corrupt, undemocratic way to make
decisions about the shape of our society even if those
involved really were wise men with a deep grasp of the
issues. It's much worse when many of those at the table
are the sort of people who solicit and believe the kind
of policy analyses that the Heritage Foundation
supplies.
'So let's not be civil. Instead, let's have a frank
discussion of our differences. In particular, if
Democrats believe that Republicans are talking cruel
nonsense, they should say so - and take their case to
the voters.'

Quote of the Day

'The duty of this new generation of revolutionary men
and women is becoming an example of modest leaders,
studious and tireless fighters for socialism. In the
barbaric era of consumer societies, to overcome the
capitalist production system that fosters and promotes
selfish interests among human beings is, no doubt, a
difficult challenge.
'The new generation is called upon to rectify and
change, without hesitation, everything that needs to be
rectified or changed and continue proving that
socialism is also the art of the impossible: to build
and carry on with the Revolution of the people, by the
people and for the people and defend it, during half a
century, from the mightiest power that has ever
existed.'

Quote of the Day
April 20, 2011
'As always, it's instructive to summon up the words of
the dean of progressive social policy, Franklin
Roosevelt. In 1935 he was asked his opinion of the
platform of the American Liberty League, which, like
the Ryan cabal, aimed to dismantle the New Deal under
the guise of preserving individual rights and free
enterprise. (Its principal backers were the Du Pont
family, conservative Democrats who might be thought of
as the Koch brothers of that era.)
'"The two particular tenets of this new organization,"
FDR told reporters, "say you shall love God and then
forget your neighbor. For people who want to keep
themselves free from starvation, keep a roof over their
heads, lead decent lives, have proper educational
standards, those are the concerns of government besides
these two points." He threw in "the protection of the
life and the liberty of the individual against elements
in the community that seek to enrich and advance
themselves at the expense of their fellow-citizens."
'Those are still the concerns of government, and to say
we can't afford them is an affront to the working
people who build America today. But let's give the
House GOP majority the last word. In the introduction
to the GOP budget resolution passed by the House, Ryan
declared: "Americans face a monumental choice about the
future of their country."
'No kidding.'

'The American people are clear. They do not want to
savage Medicare and Medicaid while giving even more tax
breaks to the wealthiest Americans, yet the Republicans
have proposed exactly that. Republicans and too many
Democrats in Congress are listening to campaign
contributors and lobbyists while the American
people want something entirely different.
'...While we have to move toward a balanced budget, we
have to do it in a responsible way, We need shared
sacrifice, not just cuts that balance the budget on
the backs of the sick, children, the poor and
the elderly.'

'In plain English, fast-rising US debt is a direct
consequences of the current global economic crisis and
the US government's decision to borrow the money it
used to bail out the major banks, brokerage firms, AIG,
GM and so on. In plainer English, the conservatives who
now dominate both parties are using S&P's negative
outlook as a club to make the masses of people pay - in
reduced services and entitlements - for the costs of
borrowing to bailout major capitalists in crisis.'

'"Excuse me, I'd like to get something off my chest.
You seem to think that because I'm not effected I
won't care if my niece, my grandson, my child is
affected. I do care. What you're doing with this Ryan
budget is you're taking Medicare and changing
it from a guaranteed health care system to one that is
a voucher system where you throw seniors on the mercy
of for-profit insurance companies".'

at a recent Town Hall meeting where Rep.
Lou Barletta (R-PA) praised Paul Ryan's
Medicare plan
