REWIND - A Week of Quotes & Cartoons

SUNDAY

Quote of the Day
October 24, 2010

'Waiting for "Superman" and the other films appeal to a
broad apprehension that the nation is falling behind in
global competition. If the economy is a shambles, if
poverty persists for significant segments of the
population, if American kids are not as serious about
their studies as their peers in other nations, the
schools must be to blame. At last we have the culprit
on which we can pin our anger, our palpable sense that
something is very wrong with our society, that we are
on the wrong track, and that America is losing the race
for global dominance. It is not globalization or
deindustrialization or poverty or our coarse popular
culture or predatory financial practices that bear
responsibility: it's the public schools, their
teachers, and their unions.'

MONDAY

Quote of the Day
October 25, 2010

'The tragedy here is that if voters do turn on
Democrats, they will in effect be voting to make things
even worse.

'The resurgent Republicans have learned nothing from
the economic crisis, except that doing everything they
can to undermine Mr. Obama is a winning political
strategy. Tax cuts and deregulation are still the alpha
and omega of their economic vision.

'And if they take one or both houses of Congress,
complete policy paralysis - which will mean, among
other things, a cutoff of desperately needed aid to the
unemployed and a freeze on further help for state and
local governments - is a given. The only question is
whether we'll have political chaos as well, with
Republicans' shutting down the government at some point
over the next two years. And the odds are that we will.

'Is there any hope for a better outcome? Maybe, just
maybe, voters will have second thoughts about handing
power back to the people who got us into this mess, and
a weaker-than-expected Republican showing at the polls
will give Mr. Obama a second chance to turn the economy
around.

'But right now it looks as if the too-cautious attempt
to jump across that economic chasm has fallen short -
and we're about to hit rock bottom.'

Quote of the Day
October 26, 2010

'The Obama administration needs to do a lot more to get
hold of this crisis, before it gets any worse.

'... The White House needs to work with Congress to
ensure that no foreclosures proceed - not just those
with questionable paperwork - without homeowners' first
being offered fair and timely loan modifications.'

WEDNESDAY

Quote of the Day
October 27, 2010

'As the nation struggles with the aftermath of the
Great Recession, few groups have suffered greater
setbacks or face greater long-term damage than young
Americans - damage that could shadow their entire
working lives.

'Unemployment for 20- to 24-year-olds hit a record high
of more than 17% earlier this year. Even for young
adults with college degrees, the jobless rate has
averaged 9.3% this year, double the figure for older
graduates, according to the Labor Department.

'Adding to the impact, surveys by the Pew Research
Center indicate, a greater share of workers in their
20s lost hours or were cut down to part-time status
than any other age group. And their incomes have fallen
more sharply, even as they are far more likely than
others to say they are working harder than ever.'

Quote of the Day
October 28, 2010

'There's going to be plenty of money going around.
Every year, executives reaped millions in bonuses paid
for with the sacrifices of frontline workers. Payment
to workers is long overdue, and the excuses are all
dried up.'

FRIDAY

Quote of the Day
October 29, 2010

'Let's return to the bright side. Another really good
outcome in 2010 may be the decimation of the filthy
rich candidate. Meg Whitman (running for California
governor), Rick Scott (Florida governor) and Linda
McMahon (Connecticut senator) have together spent
almost a quarter billion dollars of their own money
trying to get elected.

'Whitman and McMahon are both running far behind while
Scott is in a dead heat with his Democratic opponent.
We may be looking at nearly $250,000,000 in thwarted
ego, folks. So on election night, keep an eye on
Scott's fortunes, even if you don't live in Florida and
could not care less that when he was making all his
money in the private sector, he oversaw the biggest
health care fraud scheme in the history of American
government.'

Quote of the Day

'Israelis might dismiss the Palestinian threats to go
to the United Nations as theatrics. Today they might
be. But the Israelis cannot bet on the infinite
patience of the Palestinian people - or the
international community.'
